Create a New Check for Understanding

A Check for Understanding (CFU) is an online questionnaire for students to enter their responses and provide teachers with aggregate class data to broadly track student comprehension. This feature is intended as a formative method of assessment to help drive instruction and is not meant as a means for collecting grades for individual students. A CFU is created using a regular assessment from the Assessment Center and is shared with students via a web link. CFUs can be administered throughout the course of a unit, used as an "Exit Slip", or given as a unit pre-test to gauge students' prior knowledge.

For even greater customization, teachers may create their own assessment items in the Assessment Center as part of their My Created Items collection. These can then be added to an assessment that a teacher would like to administer as a CFU. For additional details, please see the associated Create an Assessment Item support guides.

On the Assessment Center landing page, select the Create/View option under the Check for Understanding section.

A Check for Understanding (CFU) must be based on an existing assessment. Therefore, you may use an assessment that you previously created in the Assessment Center or create a brand new assessment. To create a new one, click the [Create a New] Assessment button and follow the associated Create an Assessment support guides.

Hint: For even greater customization, you may create your own assessment items in the Assessment Center as part of your My Created Items collection. You can then add those to an assessment that you wish to administer as a CFU.

To create a CFU using one of your existing assessments, click the [Create a New] Check for Understanding button.

In the modal window that appears, add the necessary information (see below) to create the CFU.

Click the Select an Assessment drop-down menu and choose the assessment you wish to use for the CFU. Note that one assessment may be used to create multiple CFUs. If you teach multiple groups of students (class periods), it is ideal to create a separate CFU for each group so you can see how each one performs independently of each other.

Add a name for this Check for Understanding instance.

Hint: Select a name that will ensure you can find the CFU easily to share the link or review the results. For example, if you intend to create a CFU for multiple classes using the same assessment, consider including the class period in the CFU Name (e.g., Rounding – 5th Period). You may also wish to include the date or schoolyear in the title to help further differentiate it.

You must set an end date and an end time for your CFU. This is the date and time after which your CFU will no longer be available to students.

Enter the date in the format shown, or use the calendar icon to select an end date (use the arrows to choose the desired month).

Select YES if you would like students to see the correct answers for multiple choice questions after their submission. Select NO if you do not wish for them to see the correct responses. Note: This is only available for multiple choice assessment items.
